Actor-director Farhan Akhtar has officially started work on the script for the highly-anticipated third installment of the ‘Don’ franchise, which will be entitled ‘Don 3’. However, news has recently emerged that superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who previously played the titular role in both ‘Don’ and ‘Don 2’, has decided to pull out of the production, dashing the hopes of eager fans who were keen to see him reprise his iconic role once again.

According to a recent report by Pinkvilla, an inside source revealed, “Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani had numerous detailed discussions with Shah Rukh Khan about the possibility of making Don 3. During the pandemic, a couple of ideas came to fruition despite the challenges and morphed into a finished script. However, while recent meetings have taken place, SRK isn’t interested in reprising the role of Don at this point in time. Instead, he’s keen on focusing on films that appeal to a universal audience, and sadly, Don doesn’t quite fit the category of films that he intends to do in the next few years. Accordingly, he has communicated his decision to the stakeholders at Excel.”

According to a source, the creators of the ‘Don’ universe had grand ambitions of uniting three generations of Indian cinema legends: Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and a rising star from the younger generation. The plan to expand the Don universe, however, was deemed too gimmicky by Khan, who advised against it and ultimately withdrew from the project.
The grapevine has it that a versatile hero, who has collaborated with Excel twice in the past decade, is in talks to play the protagonist in Don. While highly fascinated by the role, the actor is self-aware that he can’t replicate the legacy created by his predecessors. Consequently, Don 3 will be given a fresh start with one of the younger actors taking up the reins.
